About BALD WOMEN Collection, sculpture & textile art:
One day it struck me how many women are bald, and how this affects them. It is commonly accepted that many men will grow bald as they grow old, but no one thinks this can happen to women too.
Chemotherapy is an unfortunate cause for baldness, and it will continue to be so until better treatments are found for cancer. For now, I had the idea of creating a collection of hats that would make women's lives easier while dealing with this problem.
This is still a work in progress. I am creating crocheted caps, beenies and bonnets, either in wool or cotton. My only requirement is that no bald head be shown, and that they are comfortable to wear. The rest is left to my imagination.
Roman and medieval helmets, old-fashioned and afro-American hairdos, are inspiring me. I am also creating my own mannequins by modeling clay, plaster and papier mache', as I don't like commercial ones. I am trying to produce a collection where every hat has its own head, and where every head or bust has its own personality.
